چکیده

We explore the prospects for using future supernova observations to probe the dark energy. We focus on quintessence, an evolving scalar field that has been suggested as a candidate for the dark energy. After simulating the observations that would be expected from the proposed SuperNova / Acceleration Probe satellite (SNAP), we investigate two methods for extracting information about quintessence from such data. First, by expanding the quintessence equation of state as wQ(z) = wQ(0)−α ln(1+z), to fit the data, it is possible to reconstruct the quintessence potential for a wide range of smoothly varying potentials. Second, it will be possible, to test the basic properties of the dark energy by constraining the parameters ΩQ, wQ and α. We show that it may be possible, for example, to distinguish between quintessence and the cosmological constant in this way. Further, when supernova data are combined with other planned cosmological observations, the precision of reconstructions and parameter constraints is significantly improved, allowing a wider range of dark energy models to be distinguished.

Direct reconstruction of the quintessence potential

We describe an algorithm which directly determines the quintessence potential from observational data, without using an equation of state parametrisation. The strategy is to numerically determine observational quantities as a function of the expansion coefficients of the quintessence potential, which are then constrained using a likelihood approach. We further impose a model selection criterion...

The Detection of the Gravitational Lens- Ing of Supernovae

The weak gravitational lensing of high redshift type Ia supernovae has the potential of probing the structure of matter on galaxy halo scales. This is complementary to the weak lensing of galaxies which probes structure of larger scales. There are already several organized searches for these supernovae being carried out for the purposes of cosmological parameter estimation. A method is proposed...

In light of the recent observations of type Ia supernovae suggesting an accelerating expansion of the Universe, we wish in this paper to point out the possibility of using a complex scalar field as the quintessence to account for the acceleration. In particular, we extend the idea of Huterer and Turner in deriving the reconstruction equations for the complex quintessence, showing the feasibilit...

Revealing Quintessence

Distance measurements to Type 1a supernovae (SNe1a) indicate that the Universe is accelerating and that two-thirds of the critical energy density exists in a component with negative pressure. If that component is an evolving scalar field (‘quintessence’), accurate (5% or so) distance measurements to SNe1a can be used to reconstruct the scalar-field potential. We derive the reconstruction equati...
